California law · SB 969
Every opener needs a battery backup
Since July 1, 2019, every garage door opener sold or installed on a California home must have a battery backup that keeps it working in a power outage. A new garage door also can't be installed on an existing opener that doesn't have one. Each violation carries a $1,000 civil penalty.
The law came out of the 2017 Northern California wildfires: when the power was cut, some people could not get their cars out of the garage to evacuate.
Keeping your opener? Keeping your opener is fine if it has a working battery backup. When we measure, we check it. If it has none, some models can take a battery add-on; older openers can't, and the opener has to be replaced before we can hang your new door.
Every opener we sell has battery backup built in. Read SB 969 on the California Legislature's site.
